History, relaxation and beautiful views.

The highlights of Dromineer.

History

There has been a settlement at Dromineer since the 10th Century, when the church was built by monks from Holy Island. The story has it that they never completed the church, and certainly it hasn’t been in use for several hundred years, but it is a wonderful spot to wander among the ruins.

Dromineer became an important port en route from Dublin to Limerick, particularly with the building of the Grand and Royal canals.

The castle (pictured) dominates Dromineer harbour, and was built in the 13th Century by the Norman family the Cantwells. In the following centuries it went through various families, including both Irish and Norman owners. Most prominent of the Irish owners were the O’Kennedys, who owned several castles/tower houses in the area. The castle was besieged by the forces of Oliver Cromwell, but (wisely) surrendered without a shot being fired.

The Lough Derg Yacht Club

In the 18th and 19th Centuries Dromineer became a place to be seen by high society, particularly on a Sunday afternoon, with sailing being one of the main activities. As a result, the Yacht Club was founded in 1835, making it one of the oldest in the world. The original club house is next door to Ritual Sauna, but in more recent times a new club house was built. Today it is home to various regattas and other sailing events, and many people from around the country have boats permanently moored here.

The Yacht Club is also home to an RNLI lifeboat base, which assists sailors in peril on Lough Derg.

Ritual Sauna

There is a purpose built sauna on the Dromineer shore, where you can relax with a sauna and take a dip in the lake. You can also enjoy a speciality coffee or tea. It’s a great way to relax, and the sauna has great views over the water.

The Lough Derg Way is a 69km walking trail, which starts in Dromineer and ends in Limerick. It is a great way to explore the lesser travelled byways of the Lough Derg shore. From Dromineer it winds along quiet roads and across fields.

Highlights of the Lough Derg Way include the paths over the Millenium Cross and over Tountinna. Read more about the Lough Derg Way here.
